Complaints are hilarious

Who’d have thought the seemingly wholesome Freshfoodkids online campaign was peddling unsavoury pictures?

Well, Mr J. Chalmers, for one. He wrote to the Advertising Standards Authority to complain about a website ad showing a young boy, Ryan, holding up a “fruit rocket” made up of fruit pieces on a stick. The accompanying message says: “Click here to get this fun recipe and lots more!” A website address is provided and the Foodtown, Countdown and Woolworths logos displayed below.”

“My initial reaction when I saw the picture was that of confusion and horror. It appears as though the boy is holding a phallic symbol…,” Mr Chalmers complained.

His concern was noted by the ARA Complaints Board, whose members took a close look at the offending illustration. “He (Chalmers) was assured that in the context of the advertisement the inference seen by the complainant had not been in any way intended, and the image had been used to promote fresh fruit to parents and children in an interesting way and appealing way,” the chairman responded.

Official verdict: No grounds to proceed.
